Moorhead’s NFL Power Rankings – Week 9

Miami Dolphins (0-7)

Previous Rank: 32

NFL: Miami Dolphins at Pittsburgh Steelers

The Dolphins gave me a scare at first thinking they were going to put up a fight against the Steelers. They were up 14-0 at one point. However, their offense and defense started cracking hard and the Steelers ended up scoring 27 unanswered points to win the game. Miami is still a ship wreck, but they might have a chance to win a game this week against the also very awful New York Jets.

Cincinnati Bengals (0-8)

Previous Rank: 31

Well it has happened. Andy Dalton has been benched coming off the Bengals eighth loss in a row. Ryan Finley will make his first start in the NFL. However, that won’t happen until next week as the Bengals are on their bye week. They need it too. They got blasted by the Rams and most of it was through the air and not the ground. Cooper Kupp demolished the secondary with over 200 receiving yards. Maybe after their bye Finley can get them back on track.

Washington Redskins (1-7)

Previous Rank: 30

Washington didn’t pull any miracles out this past Thursday as they got beat again, this time by the Minnesota Vikings. Kirk Cousins got to rub it in the face of the Redskins organization with a win. Now Case Keenum is in the concussion protocol and it looks like Dwayne Haskins might get the start this week. Jesus that sounds awful as they go up against the Buffalo Bills who are furious after losing last week to the Eagles.

New York Jets (1-6)

Previous Rank: 29

The Jets got washed out yet again as they took another loss, this time it came from the Jacksonville Jaguars. Sam Darnold did better, but honestly anything was better than his performance against the Patriots. He threw more interceptions than touchdowns, but this week they might get a chance to win again. They face the worst team in the NFL; the Miami Dolphins. Let’s hope Sam can get back on track.

Atlanta Falcons (1-7)

Previous Rank: 28

If there is one thing positive out of the Falcons’ continued struggles last week it was that Matt Schaub actually played a really good game against the Seahawks. Their secondary isn’t the greatest, but Schaub exceeded expectations with 460 passing yards, one touchdown and an interception. Julio finally got back on track catching the ball ten times for 152 yards. Their defense is still garbage, but they somehow managed to keep Russell Wilson under 200 yards passing which is great in my book. They go on bye this week hoping to fix a lot of problems.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-5)

Previous Rank: 27

The Bucs continue to stay in their place at No. 27 because they continue to put their faith in a quarterback that constantly is turning the ball over. Although Bruce Arians says that they aren’t going to make a change at quarterback that doesn’t mean Winston won’t find a new home somewhere else next season. The defense also let the team down by letting Ryan Tannehill throw three touchdowns. Things need to get better for Jameis and it might be a start this week against Seattle who just gave up 460 passing yards to Atlanta’s backup quarterback Matt Schaub.

Denver Broncos (2-6)

Previous Rank: 26

NFL: Denver Broncos at Indianapolis Colts

Denver is treading into some very treacherous waters in the quarterback position. Joe Flacco is rumored to be out five to six weeks with a ruptured disk in his neck and with Drew Lock still on IR the the Broncos will lean on Brandon Allen this week against the Browns. You know, for the most part, they played pretty decent against the Colts last weekend. But Indy walked off with a last second victory. Conservative play calling isn’t helping the Broncos either. Allen will have to prove himself worthy of starting this week against the Browns because this world of suck could get worse real fast.

Cleveland Browns (2-5)

Previous Rank: 24

Cleveland drops a spot after losing to the New England Patriots last weekend. Anything that could have gone wrong went wrong here. Honestly, I am surprised they even scored a touchdown going up against this defense. Baker threw another pick though. It wasn’t his fault as the defender made a really good play, but it just looked really bad. Plus Nick Chubb fumbled not once, but twice in this game. The Browns might have a chance to do some good this week against the Broncos who are 2-5 as well. The defense will have to step up against new starting quarterback Brandon Allen, and Baker Mayfield can’t turn the ball over at all in this game.

New York Giants (2-6)

Previous Rank: 25

New York Giants v Detroit Lions

The Giants move up one spot even though they lost to the Lions because you know what they made it interesting and Danny “Dimes” Jones threw four count them four touchdown passes in this game. This was by far the best game Jones has played since he faced the Buccaneers. Now they have a challenge this week against the divisional rival Cowboys who are coming off their bye week fresh, healed and ready to rumble.

Arizona Cardinals (3-4-1)

Previous Rank: 20

The Cardinals move down three spots after losing to the Saints last weekend. Look I knew it was going to be their time to lose, but with Drew Brees back in the starting lineup for the Saints it was a mismatched effort by the red birds (minus the Peterson interception). They also acquired Kenyan Drake with the running back problems still a mystery with David Johnson’s health. To make matters worse they have to go play the 49ers this Thursday. Kyler Murray owners beware this matchup.

Oakland Raiders (3-4)

Previous Rank: 21

The Raiders drop a spot after coming up short against the Texans last weekend. To be honest Derek Carr and the Raiders did a good job in this game, but just couldn’t pull the trigger on the Texans. Carr threw for nearly 300 yards and had three touchdowns on the day. He exploited the defense that is now without J.J. Watt. Tyrell Williams got back into the game after being out for a while and what a surprise he scored another touchdown. These two have a connection man (Jon Gruden voice). This week the Raiders battle against the Lions in what could be a really big game for rookie running back Josh Jacobs.

Los Angeles Chargers (3-5)

Previous Rank: 23

The Chargers move up two spots after their narrow escape victory over the Chicago Bears. Look I am not going to give this team too much credit here. The Chargers were kept in check for the majority of this game and their defense got gashed by the rookie running back David Montgomery as the Bears finally ran the ball for once. Rivers threw for 201 yards, a touchdown and an interception and just really couldn’t get anything going for the offense. The only reason they won the game is because the Bears kicker missed the game winning field goal…again! The Chargers now go on to face the very dangerous Green Bay Packers.

Tennessee Titans (4-4)

Previous Rank: 22

NFL: Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Tennessee Titans

The Titans might have found the answer to their quarterback struggles with backup Ryan Tannehill. They won their game against the Bucs last week and even though Tannehill didn’t throw for over 200 yards, he threw three touchdown passes. He now has a proving point game to look forward to against the Carolina Panthers who have a pretty good defense despite last week’s blowout loss to the 49ers.

Chicago Bears (3-4)

Previous Rank: 15

Just when you thought the Bears couldn’t have any more trouble kicking the ball you saw it again here. Eddie Pineiro missed a 41-yard field goal to win the game against the Chargers and I am sorry, but all I could think about when that happened was the double doink kick against the Eagles last year. The offense focused on the run finally with David Montgomery getting his big performance. However, the rest of the offense was pretty awful. Trubisky is really suspect right now compared to last year. Overall, it was heartbreaking for the Bears who now have to face the Eagles once again this week.

Detroit Lions (3-3-1)

Previous Rank: 19

The Lions move up one spot after securing a victory over the New York Giants. Matt Stafford had a very positive performance yet again as he threw for 342 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Overall, he exploited the Giants defense and proved that he can be a very viable starter in fantasy perspectives. However, the Lions defense struck out here for me allowing rookie Daniel Jones to throw four touchdown passes against them. This week they get the Raiders.

Pittsburgh Steelers (3-4)

Previous Rank: 18

Dolphins Steelers Football

The Steelers came away with a much needed victory against the Miami Dolphins last week. The team looked to be tanking to Miami originally in the game though as Mason Rudolph looked very skittish after taking that big hit against the Ravens that knocked him out cold. The defense also let the Dolphins get 14 points on them in the first half which made me want to almost throw the remote through the television. However, they rallied and scored 27 unanswered points to seal their victory. Now, they look to this week at home against the Colts. If the defense can pressure Brissett just as much as Denver did and Mason plays well, we should be able to win this game.

Carolina Panthers (4-3)

Previous Rank: 11

There is no way to sugar coat this so I am going to say it. The Panthers got straight up embarrassed and blown out by the 49ers last week. I had Kyle Allen as a bust last week on my start’ em and sit’ em column for quarterbacks and he proved to be just that throwing for 158 yards, three interceptions and took seven sacks. It was a brutal matchup not only for the offense (aside from McCaffrey), but for the defense as well as they got burned by the run in the form of Tevin Coleman who had three rushing touchdowns and over 100 yards rushing. They will look to rebound this week against the Tennessee Titans.

Jacksonville Jaguars (4-4)

Previous Rank: 17

NFL: New York Jets at Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars move up two spots after beating the New York Jets last weekend. Gardner Minshew is proving to be one of the best things about the NFL this season as Mr. Mustache had one of his best games of the season throwing for nearly 300 yards and three touchdowns. Now the Jags look to pounce on the next target this week when they take on the Houston Texans. Minshew should see a lot of productivity in his wide outs this week against them as they are just about as awful as you can get covering wide receivers.

Philadelphia Eagles (4-4)

Previous Rank: 16

The Eagles rise up two spots after knocking back the Buffalo Bills last weekend. Some of the weather wasn’t the greatest so Philly focused more on running the ball as both Jordan Howard and Miles Sanders scored on the ground while Carson Wentz tossed one touchdown in the air. The defense still gave up two touchdowns to Josh Allen so they aren’t quite there yet. They will have a chance to prove themselves when they go against the Bears this weekend.

Dallas Cowboys (4-3)

Previous Rank: 14

The Cowboys rise up one spot in the rankings as they come off their bye week. This week they go one on one with a divisional rival; the New York Giants. The main thing they need to do in order to win this game is run when needed with Ezekiel Elliot and pass the ball to Cooper and Gallup. If they can do that and pressure Daniel Jones well then this team should have trouble getting back on track and knocking off two divisional opponents in a row.

Kansas City Chiefs (5-3)

Previous Rank: 10

The Chiefs move down two spots after their loss to the Green Bay Packers last Sunday night. To be fair Matt Moore played fairly well tossing two touchdowns and 267 yards. The run game was where it hurt them though as McCoy and Damien Williams only combined for 70 yards on the night. Moore is doing a decent job of filling in for Mahomes and I have a feeling when he gets healthy again this team might get back on track. This week they go up against the Minnesota Vikings.

Indianapolis Colts (5-2)

Previous Rank: 12

The Colts move up a spot after their last second victory over the Denver Broncos. Brissett had a rough time in this game as he faced constant pressure from Von Miller and the rest of the defense. They were able to make the most out of a bad situation though as Brissett found Hilton to get them closer into field goal range and Vinateri hit a game winning field goal to win the game 15-13. They relied on the run too as Mack ran for over 70 yards and got a touchdown and the defense held its own as well. This week Brissett and the Colts travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers.

Los Angeles Rams (5-3)

Previous Rank: 14

The Rams “ram”page their way back into the top ten this week taking the number 10 spot after a dominating win in London against the Cincinnati Bengals. Cooper Kupp was an absolute stud in this matchup as he had over 200 receiving yards against this piss poor secondary. Goff did fairly decent in this game as well, but I am not convinced he has done well yet this season. The defense also did its job getting to Andy Dalton and making him suffer at their expense. They now go on bye and rest themselves for week 10.

Buffalo Bills (5-2)

Previous Rank: 7

The Bills drop two spots after they got taken over by the Philadelphia Eagles. The defense in this game played like absolute garbage and allowed the Eagles to essentially take this game away from them. Allen did his best and while he didn’t throw an interception in this game, he fumbled three times and lost one of them. The weather wasn’t that nice to either team so maybe it isn’t totally their fault. They will get the chance to right their wrong with a match against the Redskins this weekend.

Houston Texans (5-3)

Previous Rank: 9

Watson and the Texans move up one spot after their win against the Raiders last weekend. Watson played beautifully here as he threw 279 yards and three touchdowns and one of those touchdowns he threw after getting cleated in the eye. Absolutely amazing performance from Watson here. I like for them to keep the ball rolling this week, but in order to do that they have to tangle with Minshew and the Jaguars yet again this year.

Baltimore Ravens (5-2)

Previous Rank: 8

The Ravens move up  spot after coming off their bye week fresh and hopefully ready for their matchup this weekend. This is because they face the undefeated New England Patriots. This matchup does not favor the Ravens at all. In fact the Patriots defense has intercepted all the first round quarterbacks that were taken in last year’s draft. Will Lamar be added to that list or will the Ravens surprise us all?

Seattle Seahawks (6-2)

Previous Rank: 5

NFL: Atlanta Falcons at Seattle Seahawks

The Seahawks move up a spot after getting the victory against the Falcons last weekend. While Wilson struggled to throw more than 200 yards in this game he did throw two touchdowns to rookie wideout D.K. Metcalf. The rest was up to the running game as Chris Carson ran for 90 yards and a touchdown. The defense wasn’t good here though as they let backup quarterback Matt Schaub throw for over 450 yards against them. This week they get the Buccaneers in which could prove to be another for the Seahawks.

Minnesota Vikings (6-2)

Previous Rank: 5

The Vikings stormed over the Redskins last Thursday night. Dalvin Cook had himself a very nice night as he ran for 98 yards and had a rushing touchdown also while catching five passes for 73 yards. Diggs also had 143 yards receiving on the night, but he also had a fumble. Kirk Cousins had a really good matchup in terms of actually playing, but not in fantasy. Kirky boy was 88% on the night against his former team. Now they get a decent matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs this weekend.

Green Bay Packers (7-1)

Previous Rank: 3

While the Packers won last weekend against the Chiefs, the performance wasn’t enough for them to keep the number three spot in my mind so they drop one. Aaron Rodgers mostly relied on his running backs throughout the night as Aaron Jones stood out with the passing game as he had 159 receiving yards and two touchdowns and Jamaal Williams had a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown as well. The defense is the reason they drop though as they couldn’t stop Moore or the Chiefs from scoring points in this game. This week they get the Los Angeles Chargers.

New Orleans Saints (7-1)

Previous Rank: 2

Man it was good to see Drew Brees back under center for the Saints last weekend. Sadly, his comeback wasn’t enough to keep the number two spot for one particular reason. That reason is while he threw nearly 400 yards he did throw an interception. The Cardinals defense was not really the best challenge to put him up against because let us face it they aren’t really that good. However, it was still an amazing performance and now this week they get a bye to rest up.

San Francisco 49ers (7-0)

Previous Rank: 4

NFL: Carolina Panthers at San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers move up two spots after their dominating performance against the Carolina Panthers. They are 7-0 and are in their prime as a dominant force to be reckoned with. The defense intercepted Kyle Allen three times, sacked him seven times and held him under 200 passing yards. The offense also struck mostly on the ground as Tevin Coleman had four total touchdowns on the day as he ran for over 100 yards, had three rushing touchdowns and had one receiving score. The Panthers defense is really good so it was awesome to see the 49ers put them to the test. Garoppolo didn’t need to pass much in this game, but I am curious to see how badly the 49ers take it the Cardinals this Thursday night.

New England Patriots (8-0)

Previous Ranking: 1

The Patriots remain undefeated after knocking off the Cleveland Brown last weekend. This defense is proving to be one of the most formidable defenses in NFL history as they intercepted Mayfield, caused Chubb to fumble not once, but twice and made things supremely difficult for Cleveland. The Patriots continue their dominance as they go up against another AFC North contender; the Baltimore Ravens.
