Over the past couple of days there have been multiple rumors saying the New York Rangers have been looking to buyout the contract of goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. Well today, the rumors came true as the New York Rangers announced they have bought out the final year of Lundqvist’s contract.
For the past 15 seasons Lundqvist has been the face of the New York Rangers franchise. Henrik has posted a record of 459-310-96 with 64 shutouts during his time as a Ranger, and is still considered one of the best goalies in the league. However with the rising stars of Igor Shesterkin and Alexandar Georgiev, this move did not surprise too many people. Both goalies are only 24 years old, and less of a cap hit so the Rangers can build around them.
Despite being a five-time Vezina Trophy finalist, Lundqvist has yet to win the oh so famous Lord Stanley’s Cup. At age 38, Lundqvist will be tossed into the Free Agent pool, amongst an already promising list of goaltenders. Could this be just what the King needs, a new home to have a chance at winning the Stanley Cup?
