The new NBA has a new most hated team.
In years past it was the “super team” where you hated the Big 3 in the Miami Heat. Then when Lebron James went back to Cleveland, KD went to Golden State and made the Warriors virtually unbeatable to everyone not named Kawhi Leonard.
In the new era of the NBA where there isn’t a “super team” it’s tougher to find a more hated team than the Houston Rockets.
I want to be clear that the Rockets are a good team and I recognize that, but that doesn’t mean I have to like them. This team starts and ends with James Harden. It would be easy to feel bad for them and their losses to the Warriors 4 out of the past 5 years but I don’t because of Harden.
The unquestioned leader of the team had his best chance to lead his team past the KD-less Warriors last year in the 2nd round but failed to do so. Instead of talking about wanting to win a ring this year, his main concern this offseason was how he deserved the MVP over Giannis Antetenkoumpo. My man…you had a great four months of basketball after going off on Christmas but Giannis played great all 82.
In the general sense when you watch how this team plays, it is an actual eye sore to watch. It’s nonstop and little ball movement. They run the offense through Harden, as they should, but they do little to almost nothing to help try and get others involved. This is backed up with the amount of shots Harden takes along with the amount of fouls he gets. It’s actually wild to me the amount of foul calls Harden gets and tries to draw. Some players have even guarded them with their hands behind their backs because the slightest touch gets a whistle! Most nights it works because Harden is good player and everyone in their role plays the best they can…but that doesn’t mean I have to enjoy watching it.
Last night for me was the icing on the cake. If you haven’t seen it, Harden dunked the ball in the 4th quarter and the hoop guided the ball back to the top of the rim where it rolled off.
The refs called it no bucket and the Rockets lost in double OT to the Spurs. I’m all for destroying refs for blatant missed calls and this is one that was clearly missed. The Rockets however believe this decided the game. The Rockets refuse to believe that Harden going 11-38 from the field including 4-20 from beyond the arc wasn’t a factor. They refuse to address that their 2nd best player in Russell Westbrook going 7-30 including 1-6 from the 3 point line wasn’t a deciding factor. This is the problem with the Rockets and why they suck. They’re is zero accountability.
This team will make playoffs and yes will avoid the Warriors this year so there’s some positives here for the Rockets. I bet if this team spent less time complaining and more time worrying about making the next bucket, they’d succeed. This won’t happen though and they will yet again be eliminated from the playoffs.
