If you are a passionate wrestling fan like myself you will know that there are not too many hot story arcs to come out of wrestling recently. I will say however, two are very good in their separate ways. One, you have the 24/7 Championship which my colleague Josh Elsas wrote about so give that a look and what I am writing about today; Bray Wyatt. Bray Wyatt’s recent character development has been one of the best things WWE has done in recent years. Let’s dive on into the long growth and changes of not only one of my favorite wrestlers to watch, but one of the most mysterious and scary individuals WWE has to offer.
Humble Beginnings: Husky Harris
Before he was known as the mysterious Bray Wyatt the man you see before you was known as Husky Harris. He arrived on the scene of WWE’s NXT in the summer of 2010 as a rookie looking to make his name. Back in the old days of NXT when it wasn’t good he was given the mentor of Cody Rhodes which was a huge boost to his career. NXT back in the day was more reality show than competition with superstars battling it out to win contracts to RAW or Smackdown. Sadly, Harris only climbed to the number four spot out of the six rookies and was eliminated. He returned to wrestle in FCW until…
The Formation of the New Nexus
Harris would return to WWE as a mystery man who along with Michael McGillicutty (Curtis Axel) cost John Cena a match against the leader of the Nexus; Wade Barrett. The stipulation being that now Cena had to join the Nexus. Barrett denied knowing the men and said if they wanted to prove themselves to being worthy of the Nexus they had to earn it. Both Harris and McGillicutty faced off against John Cena and Randy Orton in a tag team match in which they lost, however Barrett still appointed them members anyway. Out with the old and in with the new however as CM Punk took the place of Barrett as leader and named it The New Nexus. Harris at this point was a member of CM Punk’s flock which protected him at all costs. Sadly, Harris was written off WWE with an Orton punt to the head. Harris went back to wrestle in FCW until a new character was chosen for him to play.
The Eater of Worlds and the Wyatt Family
When WWE rebranded FCW into the new NXT, a new character was assigned to our former Husky Harris; Bray Wyatt, The Eater of Worlds. Wyatt’s character arc revolved around a vicious and evil cult leader whose malicious words were almost more impressive to gaze upon than his actions. The Wyatts tore NXT to shreds with his two original followers Luke Harper and Erick Rowen capturing the NXT tag team championships. When those titles were lost they debuted on RAW as one of the most dominant and destructive tag teams yet to date. In this period Wyatt had some of the most memorable matches including The Shield and various feuds with Kane, John Cena and Chris Jericho. The feud with The Shield is considered to be one of the greatest feuds in WWE solely because The Shield was virtually one of the most dominant teams in the history of the company. When the Wyatts came toe to toe with them however, the landscape was changed. The Shield were up against a team just as dominant and the audience was ready for these two heel teams to tear each other apart and they did just that. The Wyatts put The Shield up to new heights and with that all of the members of The Shield went on to become main event stars. Goes to show that the right chemistry just may be a bit twisted, but it works well!
The New Face of Fear: Going Solo
When it was time for Harper and Rowen to be “released” according to Wyatt, he began a solo career with the persona of The New Face of Fear. During this phase Wyatt attacked and created many beautiful rivalries and matches. Many matches were delivered between Wyatt and Dean Ambrose including an ambulance match which was on point and ended the feud. After that the unthinkable happened as Wyatt made a challenge to The Undertaker at Fastlane in following Taker’s first Wrestlemania loss to Brock Lesnar. Taker accepted and Wyatt put Taker over in an awesome match. After that Wyatt made promos directing towards Ryback and had a feud with him and going over him. After this short feud Wyatt interfered in the Money in the Bank Ladder match costing Roman Reigns which eventually led to the following…
The Flock Flies Again: Reforming the Wyatt Family
During the feud with Reigns the Wyatt family was reunited with the return of Luke Harper. The two would feud and lose in a match against Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose and on the following night Wyatt revealed a new member of the Wyatt Family; The Destroyer known as Braun Strowman. Erick Rowan would eventually come back as he was dealing with injury and man did these guys have some great feuds which included The Brothers of Destruction, The ECW originals, The New Day and for a tiny bit Brock Lesnar. Harper wasn’t seen after the loss from Lesnar however and with the WWE Draft spliting up Strowman and the Wyatt Family it was time to move on so to speak.
The Land of Blue with Eyes of Red
With Bray Wyatt and Erick Rowen being drafted to Smackdown and Braun Strowman being drafted to RAW it appeared that the Wyatt family was over. Those thoughts were almost brought to light even further when Wyatt walked out on Rowen when he lost to Dean Ambrose. A new feud was brought out of the dark as Wyatt began targeting Randy Orton. These two would go back and forth until the unexpected happened. Harper returned and helped Wyatt win against Orton. Maybe a week or two went by and when Wyatt faced off against Kane and everyone was shocked when Randy Orton RKO’ed Kane and joined the Wyatt Family. These guys went on to be amazing and eventually captured the Smackdown Tag Team Championships. They would lose them however to American Alpha in a four corners elimination tag team match which saw disdain grow between Orton and Harper. They had a match and Orton won which led to Wyatt hitting his finisher Sister Abigail on Harper and exiling him.
Winning the WWE Championship
After Harper’s exile Wyatt and Orton went into the Royal Rumble and Orton came out on top winning his second Rumble match. Wyatt was then thrown into the Elimination Chamber match for the WWE Championship. This included himself, John Cena, AJ Styles, Dean Ambrose, Baron Corbin and The Miz. To the surprise of everyone, Wyatt came out on top and pinned the last man AJ Styles to become WWE Champion. Now originally, Orton refused to face Wyatt at Wrestlemania pledging devotion to his master, but the snake in the grass struck back. Orton deceived Bray and burned the Wyatt complex to the ground and challenged Wyatt at Mania beating him.
The Deleters of Worlds
After comingup short in his WWE championship match with Randy Orton and suffering multiple losses in feuds including Seth Rollins and Finn Balor, Wyatt started to target Matt Hardy. This would bring about Hardy’s “Broken” gimmick used in TNA and it was changed to “Woken” Matt Hardy. The two would face off in the Ultimate Deletion Match which Hardy was victorious and put Wyatt into the Lake of Reincarnation. It wasn’t until Wrestlemania that Wyatt appeared and helped Hardy win the Andre the Giant Battle Royal. The Deleters of Worlds were born and even captured the vacant RAW tag team championships. However, they lost them in their first title defense and Hardy left to heal from his injuries seemingly leaving Wyatt with nothing.
The Firefly Fun House and The Fiend
We now come to the most recent transformation of Bray Wyatt. Before all of this happened, Bray Wyatt deleted all of his cryptic messages from twitter and wrote solely; “Today i am someone different. Today I have become who I really am”. No one knew what he was talking about at the time until 2019 when a weird and wacky show dropped on RAW called the Firefly Fun House. Bray Wyatt was dressed in an almost Mr. Rogers looking attire and was joined by three helpful puppets. At first I was thinking what the hell is he doing. However, as the episodes came in every week I realized this was the greatest thing in WWE right now. They were funny, dark and twisted and brought about Wyatt’s new persona which he uses to harness the darkness inside of him; The Fiend. We only saw him once on the Firefly Fun House, but it was a show to be seen as Wyatt’s voice was distorted, had a vicious looking mask, he wore gloves, a jacket and said two words; Yowie Wowie. The episodes continued until the puppets started showing up on RAW and Smackdown in the background. It was only a matter of time before he arrived. Sure enough on the RAW after Extreme Rules, Bray Wyatt appeared in Fiend form and delivered a Sister Abigail to Finn Balor.
I am extremely excited to see where this goes so thank you again for tuning in to this article and remember everyone he will help you, but all you have to do is LET HIM IN.
