The first day of the PGA Championship has come and gone, and boy oh boy does Brooks Koepka look GOOD. There’s a lot more to talk about after Day 1, so let me try to break down what’s happened at Bethpage Black so far.

Overall, Tiger has struggled thus far

Unfortunately, the biggest name in golf didn’t follow up his Masters performance with a great first day in New York. He’s currently sitting at +2 and tied for 55th on the leaderboard because of his short game. Don’t get me wrong, he looked brilliant at times. But overall, he hasn’t produced the same magic he had at Augusta (at least not yet). It probably shouldn’t be a surprise that he came out with a little bit of rust after not playing in any events since the Masters, so we’ll have to see if he can turn it around over the next few days. Because we all know there’s nothing better in sports than when Tiger is in the mix.

He did have one moment that was pretty damn impressive:

Tommy Fleetwood quietly had a great first round

My favorite golfer (who only barely beats out Rickie Fowler), Englishman Tommy Fleetwood, posted a score of -3 and currently sits at #3 on the leaderboard. The mild-mannered Fleetwood continues to show up at the major tournaments and put on solid performances. It’s only a matter of time before this long-haired beauty snags a major title. Today, he had six birdies on his scorecard, which were unfortunately stunted by his three bogeys. If he can stay consistent down the stretch this weekend, I fully expect him to be in the mix late Sunday afternoon. My body needs this dude to finally take home a major.

John Daly’s golf cart stole the show

The legendary John Daly, who made his name for consistently bombing it down the fairway while smoking darts was at it again today at Bethpage Black. All he’s been doing is driving around in his cart with a cancer stick hanging out of his mouth and housing Diet Cokes from McDonald’s.

I’ll always argue that John Daly is tied with Tiger for being the best thing to ever happen to golf. Absolute legend.

Brooks Koepka looks unstoppable

The man who the sport of golf seems to continuously ignore casually set the all-time Bethpage Black record with a score of 63. This tan son of a b***h currently sits at the top of the leaderboard with a score of -7, and I have a hard time believing he’ll slow down tomorrow. He was completely content with playing in Tiger’s group, because this guy lives for playing in the shadows (probably because he’s already got enough sun). Koepka, or as I like to call him “Boulder Shoulders”, will look to defend his 2018 PGA title on Day 2.
