Call To Action-Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers continued their six game losing streak yesterday following a 6-2 loss against the Chicago Blackhawks. Five of the six goals were given up during the third period. As a result of their most recent collapse, the Oilers currently sit in the second to last spot in the Western Conference.

Oilers fans have openly expressed their frustrations with the organization, most recently throwing Oilers hats and jerseys onto the ice. The frustrations lead us to the question, “What do the Oilers have to do to become successful?”

Draft Picks–✔️Been there done that….but let’s take a look at some of the Oilers first round picks over the past few years.

2008-Jordan Eberle (22nd Overall)- Current team: New York Islanders

2009-Magnus Paajarvi (10th Overall)- Current Team: Ottawa Senators

2010-Taylor Hall (1st Overall)-

Current Team: New Jersey Devils

2011- Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (1st)-

Current Team: Edmonton Oilers

2011-Oscar Klefbom (19th Overall)-

Current Team: Edmonton Oilers

2012-Nail Yakupov (1st Overall)-

Current Team: SKA Saint Petersburg (KHL)

2013-Darnell Nurse (7th Overall)-

Current Team: Edmonton Oilers

2014-Leon Draisaitl (3rd Overall)-

Current Team: Edmonton Oilers

2015-Connor McDavid (1st Overall)-

Current Team: Edmonton Oilers

2016-Jesse Puljujärvi (4th Overall)-

Current Team: Edmonton Oilers

2017-Kailer Yamamoto (22nd Overall)-

Current Team: Edmonton Oilers

2018-Evan Bouchard (10th Overall)-

Current Team: London Knights (OHL)

As you can see the Edmonton Oilers lineup should be stacked. I mean along the way they lost top picks Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, and Nail Yakupov, but the rest of the guys that stuck around with the Oilers organization are by no means scrubs. This team has a solid group of skillful players, so they should compete with other NHL teams on a nightly basis.

New Coach-✔️ Over the past ten years the Edmonton Oilers have had seven different coaches. Coaches ranging from Pat Quinn, Tom Renney, Todd McLellan to current coach Ken Hitchcock. Most of these coaches have had successful runs with different NHL teams, however once they hit Edmonton it’s like they forget how to coach or something. We shall see how long Hitchcock’s reign will last.

New GM-✔️ Similar to the coaching situation, Edmonton has been through their fair share of General Managers over the past ten years. The Oilers have had three General Managers (Steve Tambellini, Craig MacTavish, Peter Chiarelli). Chiarelli was recently chased out of town, and Keith Gretzky was thrown into the fire in Edmonton. With the last name Gretzky he has to be great right? Sounds very promising..

Call To Action-The Oilers have completed all the necessary steps in rebuilding a franchise, except one. Connor McDavid needs to unblock me on Twitter. I believe McDavid is one of the best, if not the best, player in the NHL. However, before he was drafted in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, the GOAT* blocked me on twitter for no reason at all. A friend of mine tweeted saying McDavid would never be a “Sidney Crosby” in the NHL. I stood up for McDavid and simple said “He might be better than Sid.” As a result I was blocked?!

It was after this moment that McDavid’s career started heading downhill.

Sure McDavid has had a successful career in the NHL, but has his team? Not so much.. I believe the day that McDavid unblocks me will be the day the Oilers organization close this chapter of their book, and they can began to write a new story of success for years to come. It’s your move Connor!
