It’s been over a week now since the Pirates have started their season. Looking at this roster, I didn’t have a ton of hope that they were going to win. They have some talent in guys like Josh Bell, Bryan Reynolds, Cole Tucker, and Kevin Newman. Honestly, my hope was that they were going to be bad. I couldn’t have imagined they were going to be this bad.
Right now, they’re the worst hitting team in terms of batting average with a .187 clip, they’re a middle of the road team in collective ERA somehow, and below average in team fielding percentage.
In a shortened season, I could have never imagined this team to look so bad. The hitting is atrocious and the pitching has looked much worse than their ERA suggests. I’m amazed they’ve won two games. Currently, they sit at the bottom of the entire MLB with a 2-9 record.
This all brings a smile to my face because the tank is on. Although, I’m not sure we can call it a tank because of how atrocious they’ve looked early on. Regardless, everything is going according to plan to set themselves up to draft No. 1 2021 draft prospect, Vanderbilt SP Kumar Rocker. For those that don’t know who he is, watch what he did in the NCAA Super Regionals.
People need to understand that this team was not going to compete this year or in the near future. With a new management team, they’re using this shortened season to evaluate talent and flat out stink for draft position. We all know that this team doesn’t spend money on free agents. The best way for them to compete is to refill the farm system. Pirates GM Ben Cherington has historically done a good job at that. Looking at his previous two stops in Boston and Toronto, he has had a hand in building both teams.
If you’re worried about this team and their performance…just don’t. I’ve seen a ton of complaining from Pirate fans and the other Pirate bloggers out there about how bad they’ve been so far.
Do yourself a favor: save your energy and hope they continue to stink to claim the prize of Kumar Rocker. Hell, I’ll take fellow Vanderbilt teammate SP Jack Leiter as a consolation! The bottom line is 2013-2015 is over so let it go if you haven’t already. It’s going to be some time before they’re back competing. Keep calm and continue to lose Buccos!
