Riverhounds Defeat Defending Champions Louisville City FC in Season Opener

This past Sunday, the Riverhounds successfully came out victorious against the defending USL Champions Louisville City FC by a score of 3-1 at their brand new Lynn Family Stadium facility. The Riverhounds were very fortunate to get back into the game after what I would call a terrible first half, holding only 37% possession against a strong Louisville side that dominated the pace of play.

The Hounds found themselves behind one goal after a beautiful shot at the top of the box from former Robert Morris star Devon “Speedy” Williams. Luckily, the Hounds fought back and scored the tying goal in the dying minutes of the half going into stoppage time when Jordan Dover was played a ball in over the top of the back line and tapped the ball into the corner past the keeper.

Just seconds into the second half, hometown hero Robbie Mertz fired the Hounds second goal home to make it a 2-1 game. Shortly after that, Anthony Velarde was able to put away the insurance goal from a beautiful cross from Ropapa Mensah to make it a 3-1 game.

While the Hounds did not hold the possession edge over Louisville, there were definitely some moments of brilliance leading up to the goals. The new additions to the team, especially Ropapa Mensah, looked very strong and fill well into the Bob Lilley system.
