Remember when Don Cherry felt the need to be a miserable old man and call the Hurricanes a “bunch of jerks”? Well in case you don’t, let me refresh your memory.
I for one, think the Hurricanes are an absolute BLAST to watch, and their antics after winning a game is just awesome. It’s a fun thing to do that brings the players and the fans together for some good happy fun honestly. Which brings me to my point, what kind of insufferable human being do you have to be to condone this behavior and call them “a bunch of jerks”?
Well, apparently a xenophobic angry human being will fill that bill.
Today, Don Cherry was fired from Sportsnet for commenting on immigrants who weren’t patriotic enough in his eyes. Specifically because he didn’t see enough poppies being worn by people leading up to Remembrance Day in Mississauga, Ontario. His actual rant is below:
“You people love — you, that come here, whatever it is — you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey. At least you could pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that. These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada. These guys paid the biggest price.”
Don’t get me wrong, I am a firm believer in patriotism and support your country. That being said, never once have I ever even contemplated taking shots at people for not being patriotic. Live your life how you want to, who am I to tell you what to do. Did good ‘ol Donny boy do this? No, he took it upon himself to condemn all those who didn’t on NATIONAL TV. On “Coach’s Corner” on the “Hockey Night In Canada” broadcast.
Dude…what are you doing? Granted, the man is 85 years old, he’s had a long career and seemingly doesn’t give a flying heck about what he does anymore. This is not okay though, it’s never okay to try to tell other people how to live their lives, and what they should or shouldn’t do. I guarantee he would be FUMING if someone tried to do the same to him. It seems like that’s the type of guy he is.
Don had a storied career for sure, getting so close to coaching the Bruins to back-to-back Stanley Cups in 76-77 and 77-78, only to lose both of them. In addition to ALMOST being successful, he felt the need to defend Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith after Keith deemed the locker room a place where a women don’t belong due to a female reporter, and also stated they don’t belong there! Oh, he also thinks concussion settlements are money grabs and enforcers are “pukes”.
Yeah, this dude sounds like a really great guy, someone you should love to be around.
Just kidding, Don Cherry is not a great guy, and personally, I’m happy he finally got what he deserved. Stay in your lane Don, keep your awful opinions to yourself, there is enough toxicity in this world, it doesn’t need yours as well.
