Start’em Sit’em Running Backs – Week 1

Start of the Week – Kerryon Johnson vs Arizona Cardinals

The Lions found a gold mine here in their young running back Kerryon Johnson. If he can stay healthy he as a real shot at becoming one of the best running backs in the NFL. This week he faces a troubling Cardinals defense that gave up so many yards per game and over twenty five points to running backs in fantasy. He is my lock of the week if you have him in your league.

Chris Carson vs Cincinnati Bengals

Carson is going to dominate in this game as the Seahawks are a run first team and the Cincinnati run defense is god awful. Plus Carson is a great running back in PPR formats so expect some extra passes out of the backfield. He might lose some work to Rashaad Penny, but overall Carson is expected to be the number one back in Seattle and overall great running back play here. He is a must start week one.

Le’Veon Bell vs Buffalo Bills

Bell is a must start regardless of the team he is playing. That was the thought going through my head before I wrote this article. Then I started thinking that he hasn’t played football in how long so is the magic still there? I think it is even against a powered up Buffalo Bills defense. Also being that Darnold has barely any receivers to get the ball out to expect Bell to come in handy with some passes out of the backfield.

Austin Ekeler vs Indianapolis Colts

Ekeler was hot on my radar ever since the Melvin Gordon holdout started becoming more and more of a reality check. He has the chance to deal some real devastating damage to a decently repaired Colts defense who has Darius Leonard and a newly signed Justin Houston. Expect Ekeler to get most of his points in the air as he is a really decent PPR back. If all goes well he should keep the starting position and Melvin Gordon will find a new home.

Josh Jacobs vs Denver Broncos

Derrius Guice vs Philadelphia Eagles

Duke Johnson vs New Orleans Saints

Sit of the Week – Kenyan Drake vs Baltimore Ravens

This one wasn’t too hard to make. The Dolphins are going to get squashed by the Ravens in my estimate and when that happens Ryan Fitzpatrick will be forced to throw the ball more often in the second half of the game. Which means that Drake loses his rushing touches or they are given to Kalen Ballage who has shown he can handle the workload. You might get some catches here and there with Drake this week, but that shouldn’t be why you start him. Keep him on the bench this week.

Damien Williams vs Jacksonville Jaguars

At first i thought Williams was going to be the answer to Kareem Hunt. Then they picked up LeSean McCoy which hurts Willliam’s campaign so much. Andy Reid and LeSean McCoy have been successful together before and they should be again once he gets up to date on the offense. Williams also has a challenge this week against the Jacksonville Jaguars who are looking for payback after a dreadful 2018 season. Expect them to come at Damien Williams head on and strong forcing Mahomes to throw the ball.

Jordan Howard vs Washington Redskins

I know what you are thinking right. How can we sit virtually anyone against such a garbage Redskins team? The issue isn’t that it is how often is Howard going to be carrying the ball? Howard now joins a committee of running backs with rookie Miles Sanders, Corey Clement and Darren Sproles. With Doug Peterson loving to mix it up it will be tough to trust Howard in any sort of format especially when I believe that Miles Sanders will make a name for himself in that city.

Devonta Freeman vs Minnesota Vikings

This one might surprise you or even make you go what!? Yes I am saying Devonta Freeman is a sit this week against the Vikings. In recent years the quality of Minnesota’s rushing defense has flipped like a coin at times. You never know what you are going to get, but honestly I would rather bet on this defense than a very injury and concussion prone running back. I just don’t trust Freeman as far as I can throw him so he is a sit this week.

Peyton Barber vs San Francisco 49ers

James White vs Pittsburgh Steelers

Phillip Lindsay vs Oakland Raiders
