Now imagine the look of each out of those characters put into jersey form. Got that image in your head? No? Well, here, let me help you out then.
Out of the blue, Team Liquid announced a partnership with Marvel at Rift Rivals 2019, an LCS (League of Legends Championship Series, North America) v LEC (League of Legends European Championship) friendly League of Legends tournament hosted by Riot Games. My mind was blown, and honestly I don’t think I would have EVER seen this coming. Marvel and eSports? Those two don’t really seem to correlate. The most Marvel has done without any form of eSport was the Fortnite event. I guess you could say they participate in the FGC (fighting game community) with Marvel vs Capcom being one of the bigger games, but that’s not really Marvel itself as an entity, as much as it just has the characters.
This on the other hand, this is the giant comic entity itself. If that was ever questioned, take a gander at that nice little jersey in the middle of the picture above. Arguably my favorite, that’s the Quantum Realm uniform from Avengers: Endgame. The debut of this collaboration was very fitting, with Team Liquid’s dominate dynasty of an LCS team coming out fitted in the Captain America uniforms to take on the LEC.
According to the below tweet from Marvel themselves, this is a year long partnership, with many drops to come.
It started with their League of Legends team, but has since branched out to all the teams Liquid has, including the highly dominate Counter Strike: Global Offensive team. If you think about it, it’s a genius move by Marvel to partner with Liquid, if any team. Liquid has the #1 League of Legends team in North America, the #1 CSGO team in the WORLD (yeah you read that right, finally a NA team topping the rankings of CS:GO), and the #3 Dota 2 team in the world among other players and teams as well being ranked quite high in their respective games.
This really opens up opportunities for other giant entities, brands, etc. to branch into eSports. I can’t wait to see who else joins the foray into eSports, maybe it will be Marvel’s parent company, Disney, or perhaps a rival eSports organization (such as Cloud9 ;)?) will partner with DC to rival Marvel! Large brands have already forayed into eSports, being it Nike partnering with teams for jerseys, car brands (such as Nissan partnering with Optic Gaming), even mortgage companies (Rocket Mortgage is a huge partner of 100 Thieves, leading to the Rocket Mortgage Team House for their LCS team)!
eSports are on the rise folks, and they don’t appear to be slowing down any time soon. Hell yeah.
