Back in 2013, when the city was in disarray after the Boston Marathon bombing, David Ortiz stood in the middle of Fenway Park and delivered a speech that will go down in history as one of the greatest in Boston sports history.

Check that, it might be one of the greatest MOMENTS in Boston Sports history. I don’t know about you but David Ortiz had me ready to run through a wall after this speech.

So, when I heard the news that David Ortiz was shot this weekend I honestly didn’t really believe it at first. I mean who would shoot a man like Big Papi?

He is one of the most charismatic human beings to ever stepped onto an athletic field and on multiple occasions has uplifted an entire city.

First, he was the driving force behind one of the greatest comebacks in the history of sports when the Red Sox came back from a 3-0 deficit to take down the Evil Empire New York Yankees and go on to break an 86-year World Series drought in 2004. Then, he brought the city another World Series title in 2007 AND 2013.

I just couldn’t fathom the idea of a guy like Ortiz being shot, especially in his home country, where he is treated like a god.

Then I saw the video and it became a reality. A man walks up behind one of the greatest designated hitters in the history of the game and shoot him right in the back. What a disgusting act. What a disappointing act. What a coward.

While the act was as disgusting as I imagined it, the outright support for Big Papi was everything I imagined it to be. Athletes, Actors, Politicians, and your everyday common man supporting a guy that has given so much for the City of Boston. It was great to see.

The most recent reports were that David Ortiz went through a second surgery upon returning to Boston and was also up and walking around. I mean are you surprised?

He’s Superman and don’t be surprised if he makes an appearance at Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals tonight!
