This was the news release from WWE today.
“WWE has named Paul Heyman as Executive Director of Monday Night Raw and Eric Bischoff as Executive Director of SmackDown LIVE, newly created positions reporting directly to WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon.
In their executive roles, Heyman and Bischoff will oversee the creative development of WWE’s flagship programming and ensure integration across all platforms and lines of business. The creation of these roles further establishes WWE’s ability to continuously reinvent its global brand while providing two distinct creative processes for its flagship shows.
With more than 30 years of experience in the sports-entertainment industry, Heyman served as President of ECW from 1993 to 2001, securing pay-per-view distribution for the company as well as a national cable television deal with TNN. After his time with ECW, Heyman joined WWE’s Creative team and is widely credited with helping launch the careers of many current and former WWE Superstars.”
Soooooo question, is this a shoot or a work? This is the most important question for a lot of reasons. If they are simply on screen personalities then it’s just another dumb story line. If this is a shoot and they are becoming the creative minds behind the shows we are in for some weird stuff.
If it is indeed a shoot, then Vince is legitimately concerned about All Elite Wrestling. His response was to put his former two rivals incharge of his products. The creative minds behind WCW and ECW just became generals in the newest wrestling war.
Which could be awesome, it could jump WWE into the stratosphere where their products are competitive creatively with that of AEW.
Or it would most likely turn into nurtured products of their former brands. Paul Heyman turning RAW into some type of moc MMA product where Brock Lesnar beats up everyone. While forcing the undercard to brutalize themselves through a series of gimmick matches.
Then I would be afraid to see what Eric Bishoff has in store for the likes of SmackDown. Possibly a call up for the Undisputed Era who join AJ Styles, Finn Balor, and the Good Brother in a bizarre remake of the NWO/Bullet Club. Running rough shot over there former indie darling friends like Kevin Owens, Sami Zayne and Daniel Bryan. Who then eventually end up making a faction of their own which is kind of like Bullet Club but they were blue instead of black.
These storylines would be fun for a few months, maybe even a year, but eventually like their products they would fizzle out. My major concern is that this is an actual thing and that Vince rather hand the keys to the kingdom to two old white guys whose glory days are behind them. Instead of handing the keys to the man who created the most exciting wrestling brand of the last ten years.
If this is true I am really sorry for Triple H, maybe if were lucky he will quit and take his NXT toys with him and make a third brand separate from AEW and WWE.
